Kroger reopens upgraded Southern Plaza location

Kroger has finished a $1.7 million remodel of its Southern Plaza store on Indianapolis’ south side, reopening the location with updated decor, equipment, and a new hot foods section designed to cater to evolving consumer preferences. The renovation reflects a strategic effort to enhance the shopping experience while maintaining the store’s role as a community staple for over three decades.

The store, at 4202 S. East St., held a ribbon-cutting on July 31 to mark the project’s completion. It first opened in 1990 and employs 90 people, many of whom have become familiar faces to regular customers. The remodel preserved the store’s original framework, including its exterior signage and brick facade, to ensure continuity for shoppers who have relied on the location for generations. Inside, the redesign introduced wider aisles to accommodate increased foot traffic, particularly during peak hours, and improved accessibility for customers with mobility challenges.

New features and familiar roots

The remodel introduced redesigned aisles to create more space for shoppers, along with a counseling room at the pharmacy where customers can discuss medications and health concerns in private. Mike Goodwin, president of Kroger’s Central Division, said the updates aim to balance modern expectations with the store’s long-standing neighborhood ties, emphasizing that the changes were informed by direct feedback from local shoppers.

“We opened this building in 1990, so the updates help us meet the expectations of today’s customers,” Goodwin said. “Still, we preserved the deep connections provided by our decades of service to the neighborhood around us.”

The company also added new everyday low prices across the store. Penny McReynolds, the store’s longest-tenured associate with over 31 years at Kroger, helped cut the ribbon, symbolizing the blend of institutional knowledge and fresh innovation. McReynolds, who began her career in the store’s produce department, has witnessed firsthand the shifts in shopping habits, from the rise of organic produce to the growing preference for pre-cut fruits and vegetables. Her involvement in the ribbon-cutting showed Kroger’s commitment to retaining experienced staff who understand the store’s history and customer base.

A donation and a broader push

As part of its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative, Kroger donated $60,000 and a pallet of pasta to Second Helpings, an Indianapolis hunger relief agency. “Support like this is what turns rescued food into meals for our neighbors,” said Bob Koch, interim CEO at Second Helpings. “We’re grateful to celebrate this store refresh alongside a partner who so clearly shares our belief that no one in our community should go hungry.”

The remodel is part of a larger $200 million investment by Kroger’s Central Division this year, which covers construction and remodeling projects across Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Ohio. The division operates food stores, pharmacies, and fuel centers in those states, with many locations undergoing similar upgrades to align with Kroger’s broader corporate goals.

This isn’t the first time Kroger has updated older locations to keep pace with changing shopping habits. Similar remodels in other cities have focused on expanding fresh food options and improving store flow, often while maintaining the original layout’s core structure. The approach reflects a broader trend among grocery chains: blending modernization with familiarity to avoid alienating longtime customers.

Goodwin framed the Southern Plaza project as a way to deliver both quality and value. “We added features and upgrades that make the store more convenient and comfortable,” he said, “and which showcase the new everyday low prices available across the store.”
