Erewhon presses ahead with its promise of a radiant lifestyle
Erewhon luxury grocer expands footprint despite economic climate, offering organic products for a radiant lifestyle in Southern California.

Southern California luxury grocer Erewhon is pressing ahead with plans to expand its footprint despite the current economic climate, where most food retailers are struggling to convince shoppers that their stores are places to save money. The retailer has long built its reputation on sky-high prices and an assortment of “natural, organic and non-toxic options for a radiant lifestyle,” a marketing pitch that continues to resonate with a specific demographic.
Growth beyond Los Angeles County is the current priority. The chain is on a small tear, signaling a vote of confidence that its opulent image will resonate beyond its home base. Erewhon’s newest store is opening in Thousand Oaks, California, an affluent city in Ventura County. To reach further, the grocer is also planning a late 2027 location in Costa Mesa, giving the chain its first foothold in well-heeled Orange County. A downtown Los Angeles store is also in the works for June.
While Erewhon clearly needs to be within range of people who can afford products like the $20 smoothies and $30 packages of ice cubes it is famous for, the grocer’s strategy doesn’t just revolve around placing stores near customers with plenty of money. Erewhon’s success stems from sticking to a unique assortment that oozes its remarkable knack for differentiating itself. Shoppers know that Erewhon offers products and a shopping experience they can’t find anywhere else — shifting the spotlight from what goods cost to the lifestyle they represent.
Other grocers might not be able to rely on customers who are seemingly willing and able to pay any price. But that doesn’t mean they can’t take a page from Erewhon and work relentlessly to stand out by tapping into people’s lifestyle aspirations. In practice, this means the battle for the grocery dollar isn’t just about finding the cheapest produce or the best loyalty points; it is about convincing consumers that the trip to the store is an essential part of a curated identity rather than a mundane chore. Erewhon has mastered this by curating a selection that feels exclusive and almost like a private club, making the act of shopping feel like a status symbol in itself.
The focus remains strictly on affluent markets. Erewhon has not announced any plans to lower prices or expand into budget-friendly neighborhoods. The company continues to double down on the premium market, banking on the idea that brand loyalty can outlast economic fluctuations. According to recent data, restrictions on sugary drinks have cut soda purchases by 12%. These trends show that consumers often prioritize specific health or lifestyle choices over basic savings.
