Wegmans opens store in Charlotte North Carolina
Wegmans opens store in Charlotte, North Carolina, as low-price leader in competitive grocery market.

Wegmans, a regional grocery chain, opened its first store in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday. The store’s opening was highly anticipated, with local news outlets covering the event and Wegmans allowing customers to spend the night in its parking lot to secure a spot in line.
The chain is positioning itself as a low-price leader in the competitive Charlotte grocery market. Wegmans claims that its prices are lower than those of Food Lion and Harris Teeter, two locally based grocery stores with a strong presence in the area.
According to an advertisement sent to Charlotte-area residents, the 250 most frequently purchased items at Wegmans cost 20% more at Harris Teeter and 8% more at Food Lion. Wegmans also highlighted its “Hot Zone” pricing strategy, which offers low prices on basics like chicken breasts, broccoli, and pasta sauce.
The new Wegmans store is located near several other grocery stores, including a Food Lion about 3 miles away and a Harris Teeter about 1 mile away. Publix, another grocery store chain, also has a strong presence in the area, with several stores within a few miles of the new Wegmans.
The grocery industry in the Charlotte area is highly competitive, with several chains vying for customers. Macroeconomic pressures have affected conventional grocers like Kroger and Ahold Delhaize, and even high-performing regional chains like Publix have seen their sales growth slow.
Harris Teeter, which is owned by Kroger, recently sent out a mailer promoting its stores as places to save money. The mailer included coupons for $10 off a $50 purchase and highlighted the chain’s wine bars and full-service Starbucks coffee shops.
The new Wegmans store is also located near a Walmart supercenter and an Aldi, adding to the competition in the area. Despite this, Wegmans is reportedly planning to build a second store in the Charlotte area, with plans to develop a store in Cornelius, North Carolina, about 20 miles north of the city.
Wegmans has agreed to purchase land for the new store, which will be its second location in the Charlotte area. The chain currently operates 115 stores in nine states and Washington, D.C., and is looking to expand its presence in the competitive grocery market.
