South Point Grocery, a small-format yet full-service store, has become a fixture for area residents in the South Main Arts District of downtown Memphis since its opening in March 2022. The store is located in a building that served as a grocery warehouse in the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s.

A second South Point store opened last November in Southaven, Mississippi, just across the state line from Memphis. According to Taylor James, president of South Point parent company Castle Retail Group, the developer of Silo Square had visited the South Point Grocery in Memphis and wanted to replicate the concept.

“Our developer and landlord down there came to our downtown store and said, ‘I want this down there,’” James said.

The South Point Grocery in Memphis has been an evolutionary journey in terms of what the store sells. “The product mix in that store from [2022] to now, it’s completely different,” James said. The store has adapted to customer needs, changing its product mix and offerings based on feedback and sales.

The store features a large selection of prepared meals and to-go foods, with a deli that anchors a strong lunch business. “A great lunch crowd, a ton of folks working down there, coming through,” James said.

Tom Archer, the landlord who helped bring the store to downtown Memphis, specializes in adaptive reuse of old buildings. He wanted to bring a grocery store to the area and was committed to making it happen.

Castle Retail Group’s experience with small-format stores began with High Point Grocery, a neighborhood market on High Point Terrace that the company acquired in 2020. High Point has become a beloved part of its neighborhood.

They are always listening and interested in potential growth opportunities in and around the city. As James said, “if it makes sense, we would look to pursue that.”

For now, the focus is on continuing to serve the community.

With its commitment to adaptability and customer needs, South Point Grocery is well-positioned for continued success in the years to come.
