Sara Lee 85th Birthday cake made headlines at the frozen bakery’s headquarters, where developers crafted a custom layered dessert to honor the brand’s namesake.

Team creates a “Cheesecaken” for the milestone

Food scientists David Meza and Adam Hegadorn, together with technical services manager Becky Sowa, designed a one‑of‑a‑kind cake that combined the company’s All Butter Pound Cake with its signature cheesecake, topped with fresh strawberries. The creation, dubbed the “Cheesecaken,” was iced with the message, “Happy 85th Birthday. Thank you for inspiring generations of Sweet Moments.”

Because the subject of the celebration is also the brand itself, the team avoided a conventional bakery approach. Instead, they built the tribute from two of Sara Lee’s most recognizable frozen products, turning a simple dessert into a brand statement.

Leadership reflects on the gesture

Pete Laport, chief executive of Sara Lee Frozen Bakery, said the cake marked a moment that showed why the company’s work matters. He took charge of the Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois firm in February, succeeding Craig Bahner earlier this year. “There are moments that remind you why your work matters, and this was one of them,” Laport said.

Chief marketing officer Johnni Rodgers added that every detail of the cake was intentional, linking the celebration to the company’s heritage and the vision of founder Charles Lubin. “This celebration reflected our appreciation for the family behind the brand, our respect for Charles Lubin’s vision and our pride in earning the privilege of representing the Sara Lee name every day,” Rodgers explained.

Employees at the corporate campus received a replica of the cake so they could share in the occasion, reinforcing the communal aspect of the brand’s history.

The frozen bakery produces a range of items under names such as Chef Pierre, Bistro Collection, Superior on Main, and Cyrus O’Leary’s, extending the Sara Lee legacy beyond the iconic pound cake.

In practice, the cake’s design signals how the company intends to keep the brand relevant while staying true to its origins. By weaving together two classic products, the team demonstrates a willingness to innovate within familiar boundaries, a balance that may appeal to longtime customers and newer shoppers alike.

Industry observers note that the gesture aligns with a broader trend of legacy brands using personalized experiences to reinforce consumer connections. While the cake itself is a single event, the messaging suggests a strategic emphasis on heritage as a market differentiator.

Sara Lee Frozen Bakery plans to continue highlighting its historic roots while introducing new product lines, a direction hinted at in recent internal briefings. The company’s leadership believes that honoring its namesake will resonate with both employees and consumers, sustaining the brand’s relevance in a competitive market.

They will introduce new products.
