Kroger reopens updated Oxford store
Kroger reopens its newly renovated Oxford store with a $2 million upgrade, setting a fresh design standard for its Delta Division locations.

Kroger’s Oxford, Mississippi, store reopened this week following a $2 million renovation that updated nearly every department and set a new design standard for the company’s Delta Division.
New look, familiar roots
The location, which first opened in 2001, ranks among Kroger’s top performers in the region. The remodel introduced a fresh decor package the company plans to expand across its stores. Inside, the bakery, meat, floral, and frozen sections were expanded or reconfigured. The Murray’s Cheese island now holds the largest selection in the Delta Division.
Design elements pay tribute to the nearby University of Mississippi. Illustrations of campus landmarks, including the Lyceum and the Grove, replace generic signage above doors and in the sitting area. The store also maintained its support for the university’s Grove Food Pantry, which assists students facing food insecurity. During the reopening, Kroger donated $5,000 to the pantry.
Dr. Shawnboda Mead, vice chancellor for student affairs at Ole Miss, accepted the check and addressed the crowd. She stated the partnership ensures students don’t have to choose between textbooks and groceries.
Decades of service recognized
George Brown, head of communications and public affairs for the Delta Division, led the celebration. Store Leader Latoya Sullivan highlighted 12 associates, along with herself, for service ranging from 20 to 40 years. The group stood on stage as attendees applauded, a rare acknowledgment of long-term commitment in an industry known for high turnover.
Division leadership attended the event, including President Micheal Cristal, VP of Operations Niki Harvey, VP of Merchandising Jules Smith, and HR Leader Jerusha San Roman. The division oversees 93 stores across five states and employs over 13,000 people.
Such investments extend beyond appearance. Kroger has been modernizing its Southern footprint, where competition from regional chains and dollar stores has grown. A refreshed store can alter customer perception, even if products remain unchanged. The Oxford remodel indicates the company is prioritizing experience alongside efficiency.
The Oakland, Mississippi, location will be next.
A major expansion there is underway and expected to finish in November. No budget or scope details have been shared, but the project continues the pattern of updating older sites rather than constructing new ones.
For now, the Oxford store serves as a model for Kroger’s updated design approach. If customer traffic and sales remain steady or improve, the company may speed up similar remodels across the division. The anniversary celebration in Chicopee shows how long-standing grocers can refresh their presence while honoring local ties.
